Uric Salt Urinal Floor Damage — Causes, Chemistry and Prevention

The Hidden Cost of Urinal Drips

Uric Salt: The Silent Destroyer of Restroom Floors

Every drip that misses the drain deposits uric acid on your floor. Over time it crystallises into uric salt — corroding grout, staining tiles, and creating a permanent odor source that no cleaner can fully remove.

What Is Uric Salt and Why Is It So Damaging?

Urine contains uric acid — a compound that, when it dries on a surface, crystallises into uric salt (sodium urate). Unlike liquid urine, uric salt crystals bond to porous surfaces including grout, concrete, and unglazed tile. Standard floor cleaners dissolve the surface layer but leave crystals embedded deep in the substrate. Each new deposit adds another layer. Over months and years, the accumulation causes visible staining, grout erosion, and a persistent ammonia odor that returns within hours of cleaning.

pH 5–6

Uric acid is mildly acidic — enough to etch grout and corrode sealant over repeated exposure

Insoluble

Dried uric salt crystals are largely insoluble in water — standard mopping does not remove them

Permanent

Once embedded in porous grout or concrete, uric salt requires enzymatic or acid-based treatment to break down

How Drips Become Floor Damage

01

Residual drip escapes the urinal

After use, a small volume of urine runs down the outside of the urinal bowl and drips onto the floor — bypassing the drain entirely.

02

Uric acid dries and crystallises

The liquid evaporates within minutes, leaving uric acid behind. It crystallises on contact with the floor surface, bonding to grout lines and tile edges.

03

Crystals accumulate with every use

In a high-traffic facility, a single urinal may receive hundreds of uses per day. Each deposits another layer of uric salt. The buildup is invisible at first — then permanent.

04

Grout erodes, odor becomes structural

Repeated acid exposure degrades grout binders. The floor becomes porous, trapping bacteria and amplifying odor. At this stage, replacement — not cleaning — is the only remedy.

Stop It at the Source

U-R-IN® is the only urinal screen with a patented funnel geometry that physically catches residual drips and channels them into the drain. No drip reaches the floor. No uric acid deposits. No crystallisation. No floor damage.

Patented drip-catching funnel

US Patent 11,828,053 — the only screen designed to intercept drips before they escape the urinal.

Eliminates the deposit cycle

No drip on the floor means no uric acid, no crystallisation, and no accumulating damage.

Reduces deep-clean frequency

Facilities report significant reductions in enzymatic treatment costs when drip contamination is eliminated at source.
